New Year’s Fire In The Woods

dsc_0003

One evening the kids and myself wanted to go into the forest beside where i live and explore the forest at night.  It gets dark early which is great and we ventured into Jackson’s Park here in Peterborough.  I gave them their camping knives and a headlamp and off we went.

We followed the creek to find a good little spot in the snow along the bank to build a fire using the fallen deadwood.

Up more along the creek we found a little place that is hidden.  We started to set up camp and we all had little tasks to do before the sun went down.  We would wait till darkness to start the fire and hopefully nobody would see us and call the “fuzz” and report us.

As the smaller sticks started to catch we wanted to add larger wood on top.  We should have brought some marshmallows for our trip into the woods.  After a while and some blowing on the coals to get it to go… we had a little fire we were proud of.

The fire cracked and flickered under some large trees we camped under.  We sat warm in the snow in our snow pants and the warm glow of the fire warmed our faces.  It was a sweet sweet moment in the still of a winter’s night in the forest the three of us.

We need to get out and explore more as a little triangle of 3

Peterborough Folk Festival 2016 | Dan Mangan

pff1

This year… I was working during this years festival.  Saturday night… ended up going afterwork up north to a cottage to watch the Tragically Hip’s last concert on CBC.  Afterwork on Sunday… I went to sit on the hill to watch Royal Wood perform followed by Dan Mangan.

This year the lineup was pretty good.  Dan was who I wanted to see.  He was great stripped down with his guitar man by his side and he played a great selections of songs.  It was great to see Shay on the Sunday and catch up with her and to my left was a PTBO Tumblr peep Rachel and her BF.

When the festival gave Dan the nod to wrap it up he came off the stage and played two more songs standing on a chair.  Robots is one of the fan faves to close things down.  I was impressed with so many people knowing the words. 🙂

I will knock Dan off my list of 30 artists to watch live on my101 list.  Below is “Robots”

The Rural Alberta Advantage Live at Massey Hall | Peterborough Folk Festival

At the Peterborough Folk Festival last night… the closing artist was The Rural Alberta Advantage.  I went up to the stage in front of the speakers and just loved the energy and vibe of these three.  Loved the the drummer being close and I just watched him whale on them.

I downloaded 8 songs and just loved this video from YouTube from Massey Hall since all the songs I downloaded are from this video and I just ripped the audio from the video and can’t wait till I need a little “pick me up” on any day.  After watching them live… I know am hooked.  Can’t wait to buy a ticket to the next show in Toronto.

Below is a tiny bit of video.  Being in front of the speakers the sound I heard did not pick up on the iPod so I just tried to line up some audio from the Massey Hall and did my best to sync it.  You get the drift.  Check them out live and you will be hooked too.

101 Things in 1001 Days | Volunteer My Time For A Good Cause

A while back around the holidays… I went to a Men’s Shelter in Peterborough and helped out in the kitchen with meal prep and also serving food to Men.  I actually enjoyed it and I also felt bad when I was not working  that I should be helping out between 4:30 and 6pm Monday to Friday.  Since I’m renting a couch downtown and my shifts have been mostly starting in the afternoons… I’ve been going to the shelter a couple times a week in the morning to basically help clean up.  I clean up the food station where in the mornings there is coffee and a good amount of donated bread from the local supermarkets where the men who stay there have some toast in the morning.  I’ve also gone upstairs to help bring down laundry to help do a load of laundry in the morning before I head out to run some errands before starting my shift.  I’ve sat and talked to some of the Men there and I enjoy talking with the staff.

It’s a humbling experience and I’m glad that I’m volunteering.  I have been working during the suppertime dinner shift… but hopefully I can help out there also if I have some free time that lines up with that time slot.

I’m going to keep volunteering there as long as I can.  I’m also looking forward to volunteering with GreenUp  and help out with some of their events.
