A while back around the holidays… I went to a Men’s Shelter in Peterborough and helped out in the kitchen with meal prep and also serving food to Men. I actually enjoyed it and I also felt bad when I was not working that I should be helping out between 4:30 and 6pm Monday to Friday. Since I’m renting a couch downtown and my shifts have been mostly starting in the afternoons… I’ve been going to the shelter a couple times a week in the morning to basically help clean up. I clean up the food station where in the mornings there is coffee and a good amount of donated bread from the local supermarkets where the men who stay there have some toast in the morning. I’ve also gone upstairs to help bring down laundry to help do a load of laundry in the morning before I head out to run some errands before starting my shift. I’ve sat and talked to some of the Men there and I enjoy talking with the staff.
It’s a humbling experience and I’m glad that I’m volunteering. I have been working during the suppertime dinner shift… but hopefully I can help out there also if I have some free time that lines up with that time slot.
I’m going to keep volunteering there as long as I can. I’m also looking forward to volunteering with GreenUp and help out with some of their events.
