The Lufthansa Cocktail was served on Lufthansa flights in the 1950s to passengers of the First Class. Due to the lack of space and staff on board, Lufthansa decided to bottle the cocktails before the flight, based on definite recipes and premium spirits. Those cocktails were then served on board as a Welcome Drink. Many wanted to transport the charm and elegance of flying, the status symbol of its time, back to their homes. Soon the Lufthansa Cocktail was also offered in retail and turned into a must-have item for every German house bar. In 2015 the former bartenders Steffen Lohr and Bastian Heuser took over the trademark rights for the Lufthansa Cocktail and have been offering a range of six bottle-aged cocktail based on high-quality brand spirits ever since.
These bottle aged mixes are easy to serve: The exact preparation is written on each bottle, yet they follow the same principle: pour the cocktail over 4-5 ice cubes and add a garnish. The garnish usually is a citrus fruit, available in every supermarket. And those who like it more on the lighter side can top up their cocktails with a splash of soda, tonic water or sparkling wine.
Since they only use spirits for Lufthansa Cocktail, its shelf life is virtually unlimited.
I used my Lufthansa Miles & More card at the Miles & More Worldshop to redeem some miles and picked up two bottles that will I can pick up in the Frankfurt Airport upon arrival when I fly into Germany on my first business trip for work. Each bottle pours about 6 drinks so I will end each night with a drink. Why not.
