Song Of The Year 2019 | Bon Iver w/ Sh’diah

2019 was a year of disappearance. Well, that’s not true… but it was a year of working and not living. The highlight of the year was going on an epic trip with my kids to Europe and a song from that rings in my ears. I used to drop songs on the quarter, and I need to start doing that again in 2020. So, if one song can sum up the year it would be this one from Bon Iver. It’s called sh’diah and it’s simply beautiful. I used it in the sunset part of our Europe vlog. It’s close to a minute and a half into it.

Wow… the last time that I posted a song of the quarter was at the end of March in 2018. What the hell happened to me. Oh well… I can try and get it back on track going forward. Here are all my previous songs.

Song of The Quarter | Something About your Love | Mansionair | Q2

Australian trio Mansionair has just released a brand new single, “Astronaut (Something About Your Love)” and it sounds like something straight out of a Victoria’s Secret ad. It’s seductive, smooth, and definitely worthy of some sort of trailer or commercial.  This song makes me happy and it’s been on repeat.  After a couple of days playing it raps up my feeling going into spring.

Mansionair continues to hone in on their synth-heavy sound with minimalistic verses and a more danceable chorus that bounces into a trance. Produced by the band and mixed by Eric J, it’s distant and somber, yet something about it leaves room for hope. Of the track, producer/guitarist Lachlan Bostock said, “We shoved a microphone deep inside a piano and recorded all the atmospheric noises that came out. Like what I imagined an astronaut felt as if he was looking back at Earth.”

[Verse 1]
Slow down, stepping up my game
Tied to you, try not sink on through the cracks
And maybe I could forget this town
And maybe I should get out

[Bridge]
Ooh
There’s something about your love
Can you feel it, ooh
There’s something about your love
Can you feel it
Can you feel it
Can you feel it

[Chorus]
Can you feel it
Can you feel it
Can you feel it

[Verse 2]
Right now, I’m feeling like a astronaut
I’m fading to the thought of coming back to you
And maybe I should forget this town
And maybe I could get out

{Bridge}
Ooh
There’s something about your love
Can you feel it, ooh
There’s something about your love
Can you feel it
Can you feel it
Can you feel it

[Outro}
Ooh
There’s something about your love
Can you feel it, ooh
There’s something about your love
Can you feel it

Song Of The Quarter | Moon River by Frank Ocean | Q1

It is truly a sign of the terrible times that many American youths have never wept uncontrollably to “Moon River,” the heartbreaking ballad “a very lovely, very frightened girl” strums on her fire escape in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Lucky for them, Frank Ocean, the elusive romantic we truly do not deserve, dropped a cover of the Henry Mancini/Johnny Mercer classic just hours after Valentine’s Day. As originally performed by Audrey Hepburn, “Moon River” is a wispy ode to wanderlust and the immense opportunities “two drifters” find in the glorious unknown. But it becomes something far different in Ocean’s hands; as he showed on his 2016 cover of the Isley Brothers’ (and Aaliyah’s) “(At Your Best) You Are Love,” he is never content with simply imitating another artist.

Ocean’s version of “Moon River” trades Hepburn’s gentle sigh for bold and confident yearnings. As he warbles about the wild surrounding world, Ocean envisions his own self-realization through double-tracked new lines like “What I see, What I become.” Ocean’s only sin here is cutting the original’s detail about “my huckleberry friend,” a sweet allusion to the carefree innocence of childhood that feels right up his alley. (As he once sang, wisely, “We’ll never be those kids again.”) Ocean’s “Moon River” retains the enchanting comfort of the Hepburn original without sacrificing any of his genius. It’s the balm we never knew we needed.

[Intro]
One, two

[Chorus]
Moon river, wider than a mile
I’m crossing you in style someday (someday, day)
A dream maker (maker, maker)
My heartbreaker (you heartbreaker)
Wherever you’re goin’, I’m goin’ that way (the same, the same…)

[Refrain]
Two drifters off to see the world
There’s such a crazy world to see
We’re all chasin’ after all the same
Chasin’ after our rainbow’s end

[Chorus]
Moon river, wider than a mile
Crossin’ in style someday
My dream maker, heartbreaker
Wherever you’re goin’, I’m goin’ the same

[Refrain]
Two drifters off to see the world
It’s such a crazy world you’ll see
What I see, who I become
What I see, who I become
We’re all chasin’ after our end
Chasin’ after our ends

[Outro]
Life’s just around the bend, my friend
Moon river and me

tumblr_or0xdqtZB21w4motno1_540

[Verse 1]
Tell me all your little thoughts
Tie you up, not enough
Give me that bad love, bad love
Show me you’re a criminal
Bite it up till it talks
Give me that bad love, bad love

[Verse 2]
We could be high on feeling requisite
Under the thoughts, give me your love, give me your bones
We could have love on fire
I give it all up for bad love

[Chorus 1]
I’ll be your warmth here
I’ll be your back
I put you in the corner when you open up
Please, baby, back for bad love, bad love

[Verse 3]
Tell me you’re another girl
Heavy lust, heavy touch
Give me that bad love, bad love
We could have love on fire
I give it all up for bad love

[Chorus 1]
I’ll be your warmth here
I’ll be your back
I put you in the corner when you open up
Please, baby, back for bad love, bad love

[Chorus 2]
I’ll be your warmth here
And how can I wait?
I’m holding your bag for you
Please, baby, back for bad love, bad love

[Outro]
How can I wait?
Holding your bag for you

Northern Wind | City & Colour | Song Of The Quarter | Q3 2017

This song is #12 on my “most played” songs in iTunes.  The lyrics haunt me in a good way.  Just love the sound of Dallas.  3 years ago today… it played in a earbud against a wall…  After the song finished she could take her hands off the wall.  I needed the entire song to figure out how she kissed and I needed a head-start.  As the story goes… Two hours later… we went for drinks and left being in front of  that wall.  What a fucking crazy night.  Mind blown.

So for the entire length of the song… I could stand there and kiss her and all she could do is stand against a wall with her hands to her sides.  Did I mention it was the first time I met her in person…

I’m late picking my song of the quarter this year.  We will call this Q3 of 2017.  I still can’t decide on a song that represents my 2nd quarter of 2017… I will think of that one and update the blog.

1-northern wind

“Northern Wind”

You’re the Northern Wind
Sending shivers down my spine
You’re like fallen leaves
In an autumn night

You’re the lullaby
That’s singing me to sleep
You are the other half
You’re like a missing piece

Oh my love
Oh my love
Oh my love
You don’t know
What you do to me

You are all four seasons
Rolled into one
You’re like the cold December snow
In the warm July sun

I’m the jet black sky
That’s just before the rain
Like the mighty current
Pullin’ you under the waves

Oh my love
Oh my love
Oh my love
You don’t know
What you do to me

I’m the darkest hour
Just before the dawn
And I’m slowly sinking
Into the slough of despond

Like an old guitar
Worn out and left behind
I have stories left to tell
They’re of the healing kind

Oh my love
Oh my love
Oh my love
If I could just
Find you tonight
If I could just find you tonight
Oh my love

Do do do [x5]

Black Oak | Because It’s There | Song of The Quarter | 2017 | Q2

Love this song.  Makes me happy and positive.  Loved the words also.

There’s still so much that I can learn
That I won’t understand
But even so, all I know will be forgotten soonI’ll rise and fall again
Aimless and undulant
With blood that’s thicker than a bond
And my bones resolved to dust

There’s still a mountain to conquer
Because it’s there
And when I climb it I’ll know just how steep it was

I’ll rise and fall again
Aimless and undulant
With blood that’s thicker than a bond
And my bones resolved to dust

There’s still a lot I’ll become
On a road somewhere
Until the curtain call before the final act

I’ll rise and fall again
Aimless and undulant
With blood that’s thicker than a bond
And my bones resolved to dust

So, let the wind disperse
The traces of my steps

I’ll rise and fall again
There’s still a lot that I won’t understand

I’ll rise and fall again
There’s still a mountain because it’s there

I’ll rise and fall again
There’s still a lot I’ll become somewhere
